Getting a crochet hat to fit properly without a model is not always easy. I have put together a crochet hat size chart to help you properly size your crochet hat. I basically use this chart in sizing all my crochet hat patterns.

Crown circle diameter, I take the head circumference and divide by 3.14.
Crochet hat height, I take the head circumference and divide by 10, and multiply by 4.
I generally round my numbers off to the nearest half inch.
Hats are generally made about an inch smaller in circumference than the circumference of the head. This keeps the hat fitting snug and from falling off. Most crochet hats have about an inch of stretch to them.
